SCHOOL DISTRICT SCORES We have reviewed all of the available statistics for all 126 public school districts on Long Island and created easy-to-understand ratings and rankings so that you can better chose your next school district and neighborhood. We have analyzed school district scores in three main ways. Overall Scores The first is to simply look at the overall scores to determine how well it has done compared with all of of the other school districts on Long Island.
Performance The second and maybe more important measure is we compare the school's scores to what you would expect based on the student and neighborhood population. If a school does better than you would expect given its population, it will shine in this category. A school in a poverty stricken area with 70% of its students earning Regents Diplomas and going on to college will score much higher in this category than a school in a wealthy neighborhood with the same 70% of students earning Regents and going to college.
Best Buys
We compared the scores of all 126 school districts with the cost of a home for their surrounding neighborhoods. School districts that performed well and offered reasonably priced homes ranked high on this list and earned the title of Best Buy.
Why Our School Reviews Are The Best Around We looked at the school district performance and overall scores with a keen eye on making sure that we got to the statistics that really mattered. While it is nice to know how much is spent per child and average class size (and we have those statistics), we think it is even more important to know how well the children are doing. We also think it is important to know how well the school is doing when you compare it to its surrounding neighborhood. We think that the results show that some schools that have seemingly ordinary scores are actually doing a fantastic job given their student population and resources and are hidden gems that will go the extra mile for its students.
